Responsys Link Tables

Learn how Responsys tracks clicks in emails you sync from Knak, and how to choose the right link table option.

Overview

When you sync an email from Knak to Responsys, Knak can also create or update a link table for your campaign. This article explains what a link table is, where to find it, and which option to choose when you sync.

To set up the integration and sync your first email, see Responsys Integration.

What Is a Link Table?

A link table is how Responsys tracks clicks in your email.

Each link in your email gets a name. The link table matches each name to its web address (URL). This lets Responsys report on which links people click.

Each campaign has its own link table.

To learn more, see Oracle's guide: Overview of Link Tables.

Where to Find Your Link Table

If your campaign does not have a link table yet, Knak creates one. Knak names it after your campaign:

{campaign name}_knak_linktable

If your campaign already has a link table, Knak uses that table instead. This is true even if the table has a different name. It includes a link table you made yourself in Responsys.

To find it:

  1. Open Campaigns in Responsys.

  2. Click your campaign.

  3. Look in the campaign's details for the link table name.

The link table is not saved in the same place as your email. Your email's HTML is saved here:

Content Library > z_knak > [campaign name]

Link Table Sync Options

You choose a link table option each time you sync. The options depend on whether this is the first sync or a resync.

When

Option

What it does

First sync

Auto Generate new table (default)

Adds your email's links to {campaign name}_knak_linktable. If that table does not exist yet, Knak creates it. If it already exists, Knak adds to it.

First sync

Don't alter the link table for this campaign

Leaves the link table as it is. Nothing is written to it.

Resync

Update link table

Adds or updates your email's links in the campaign's link table. If the campaign already has a link table, Knak uses it, even if it has a different name.

Resync

Don't alter the link table for this campaign (default)

Leaves the link table as it is. Nothing is written to it.

The first sync options also appear when you use Sync As New Email.

Knak never deletes links from a link table. If you remove a link from your email, it stays in the table. This does not cause any problems.

The Resync Default

When you resync, Don't alter the link table for this campaign is selected by default. If you click Confirm & Re-Sync without changing it, Knak does not write anything to the link table. Your email still syncs.

To update the link table, select Update link table before you click Confirm & Re-Sync.

Tip: Select Update link table if you added or changed links since your last sync.

Sync to a Different Campaign

Confirm & Re-Sync only syncs to the campaign you used before.

To sync the email to a different campaign:

  1. Open your email in Knak.

  2. Click Actions > Sync.

  3. Click Sync As New Email.

  4. Select the new campaign.

  5. Choose a link table option. Auto Generate new table is selected by default.

  6. Click Confirm & Sync.

Link Names

Responsys needs a name for every link it tracks. If a link has no name, Knak creates one for it. This makes sure the link still gets tracked.

Automatic names look like this: text_1a2b34567cf8_9

If you see names like this, nothing is wrong with your email or the sync.

Good to know:

  • Each link keeps the same name every time you sync.

  • Link names do not use the link title you set in Knak.

Use Your Own Link Names

You can choose your own link names instead of using automatic names. Knak Support needs to turn on this setting for your account first.

When the setting is on, the link label you set in Knak becomes the link name in Responsys.

  1. Contact Knak Support to turn on custom link names for your account.

  2. Set a link label for each link:

    • Text link: Open the text link settings. Enter a link label in the Alias section.

    • Image link: Open the Platform Link Tracking image settings. Enter a link label in the Alias section.

  3. Sync your email to Responsys.

To learn more about link labels, see Platform Link Tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why didn't my resync change the link table?

On resync, Don't alter the link table for this campaign is selected by default. This option leaves the link table as it is. Select Update link table before you resync to change it.

Why can't I find the link table in the Content Library?

The link table is not saved in the Content Library. Open your campaign in Responsys. The link table is in the campaign's details.

How do I sync my email to a different campaign?

Click Sync As New Email in the sync window. Confirm & Re-Sync only syncs to the campaign you used before.

Why are links I removed still in my link table?

Knak adds and updates links in the link table. It never deletes them. Links you removed from your email stay in the table. This does not cause any problems.
