What are "Font Weights?"
By definition, "Font weight" is the overall thickness of a typeface's stroke in a given font.
The different font weights are typically categorized as follows:
Thin | 100 weight |
Extra Light/Ultra Light | 200 weight |
Light | 300 weight |
Normal/Regular | 400 weight |
Medium | 500 weight |
Semi Bold/Demi Bold | 600 weight |
Bold | 700 weight |
Extra Bold/Ultra Bold | 800 weight |
Black/Heavy | 900 weight |
How to Configure Font Weights in your Knak Account
If you do not see the option for different font weights while you are editing an asset, send a message to the support team and we can set this up for your account!
Global vs Localized Font Weight Selection
The Knak builder allows users to customize font weights either globally through the right-hand panel or locally via the top pop-up editor. This flexibility provides users with control to adjust designs precisely for different sections or elements.
Just let us know that you would like to have the preference for "font weights" applied to your account and we will take care of the rest!
If you are interested in adding Custom Web Fonts to your account, find out more information here and contact the Knak Support team to get this set up for you.
Known Limitations
*Important Note: If you only have certain font weights available in your font family folder, and you try to use a different weight that is not loaded into the font file, the builder will automatically default to the closest font weight available. For example, if "Semi Bold 600" is selected but not uploaded, the builder may default to "Bold" or the nearest available weight. Similarly, choosing "Light" without it being uploaded could result in a fallback to "Regular" or a similar weight.
If you would like to avoid any issues like this while requesting a custom font to your account, supply as many fonts as you can/as required for your desired outcome from your brand!
Tips for Managing Fonts in Knak
Upload All Required Font Weights: Make sure to upload every weight you plan to use, from Light to Bold or Extra Bold.
Test Your Selection: Preview different font weights after uploading to verify they render correctly.
Plan for Fallbacks: Anticipate how the fallback system will work. For instances where weights are unavailable, understand which alternatives may be used and adjust your design accordingly.
Keep Design Consistency: Whenever possible, limit the number of font weights to simplify project management and ensure design uniformity.
