What Are Custom Links?
Custom Links are reusable URLs that use variables to personalize a destination. Instead of creating multiple versions of the same URL, you can create one Custom Link and configure variable values when you use it.
You can create variables as:
Text - enter custom values manually
Dropdown - select from predefined options
When you select a Custom Link in the Knak Builder, Knak uses the chosen variable values to generate the final destination URL.
When to Use Custom Links
Use Custom Links when you need to personalize where users go after clicking a link.
Common use cases include:
Directing users to region-specific content
Creating personalized resource links
Supporting soft-login experiences
Routing users based on campaign type
Personalizing tracking parameters
Managing URLs across multiple marketing platforms
Example
Instead of creating separate URLs for North America, Europe, or Asia Pacific audiences, create one Custom Link. Allow marketers to choose the appropriate region when building the campaign.
This approach reduces manual work. It also makes URLs easier to maintain as campaigns grow.
Create a Custom Link
Custom Links are available from the Admin area.
From the left navigation, click Custom Links.
Step 1: Create a Custom Link
Naming Best Practices:
Marketers only see the Custom Link name when selecting a link destination. Use clear names that describe the intended use case.
Examples:
Resource Center Link
Regional Event Registration
Soft Login Destination
Step 2: Add Variables
Variables control how the destination URL changes.
Example: Dropdown Variable
A Region dropdown lets marketers select from predefined options while storing the value used in the generated URL.
Label (Displayed to Marketers) | Value (Used in URL) |
North America |
|
Europe |
|
Latin America |
|
Asia Pacific |
|
Example: Text Variable
A Text variable lets marketers enter a custom value when configuring the link.
Label | Example Value |
UTM Source |
|
Step 3: Configure the Destination URL
Enter the base URL.
Click the + icon.
Insert the required variables.
