Create and Use Knak Tokens

Use Knak Tokens to manage campaign-level values in one place. Update a token once to apply the new value across the assets in your campaign.

What Are Knak Tokens?

Knak Tokens are reusable values that you can add to emails and landing pages.

Tokens work well for campaign information that appears in several assets. For example, an event campaign might use tokens for:

  • Event date

  • Event time

  • Event location

  • Event name

  • Registration deadline

Set the value once at the campaign level. Knak displays that value anywhere you use the token in the campaign.

If the value changes, update the campaign token instead of editing each asset separately.

Note: This feature is currently in Alpha testing. Please reach out to spencer@knak.com if you would like to participate.

Why Use Knak Tokens?

A campaign can contain several emails and landing pages that share the same information.

For example, you might have 10 emails and two landing pages that display an event date. If the date changes, updating every asset manually takes time. It can also increase the risk of inconsistent information.

With Knak Tokens, update the event date once. Knak applies the new value to each place where that token is used in the campaign.

Knak Tokens also let you preview token values directly in Knak. This makes it easier to review your content before syncing it to your marketing automation platform.

Create a Token

Create tokens from the Tokens section in Knak. Tokens are organized into categories.

Create a Token Category and Add Tokens

Each token category must contain at least one token before you can save it. Add one or multiple tokens when you create the category.

  1. Open the Admin section.

  2. Select Tokens.

  3. Create a new token category.

  4. Enter a category name, such as Event Details.

  5. Add a token to the category.

  6. Enter the token name, such as Event Date.

  7. Enter a default value if needed.

  8. Add more tokens if needed.

  9. Save the category.

You can create the following types of tokens:

Token type

Example

Text

Speaker Name: Jordan Lee

Number

Session Number: 3

Date

Event Date: October 15, 2026

Calendar File

Add to Calendar

For Text, Number, and Date tokens, you can configure a default value at the admin level. Campaigns can use the default value or set a campaign-specific value.

For Calendar File tokens, you cannot configure a default value at the admin level. Set the calendar file value when you add the token to a campaign.

To add more tokens later, click the Edit icon beside an existing category. Add your tokens, then save your changes.

Add a Token to an Asset

Insert a Knak Token while editing content in an email or landing page.

  1. Open your asset.

  2. Select the content where you want to insert the token.

  3. Open the Token option in the text editor toolbar.

  4. Select the Knak Token you want to use.

Repeat these steps anywhere you want the campaign value to appear.

Preview Token Values

Preview your asset to see the campaign-specific token values before you complete your review.

For example, if the Event Date token is set to September 21, the preview displays September 21 in the content.

This lets you review the final value directly in Knak. Use the preview during your quality assurance (QA), review, and approval process.

Update a Token Across Your Campaign

Update a campaign token when shared information changes.

  1. Open the campaign.

  2. Open the Tokens section.

  3. Find the token you want to change.

  4. Update its value.

  5. Save your changes.

  6. Open an asset that uses the token.

  7. Preview the asset to confirm the updated value appears correctly.

Example

Knak updates instances of that token across the campaign assets that use it.

For example, change an Event Date token from September 21 to September 25.

Preview an asset that uses the token to confirm that September 25 appears.

Sync Token Values to Marketo

When you sync an asset to Marketo, Knak includes the resolved Knak Token value in the asset's Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).

For example, if your Event Date token has a value of September 21, the synced HTML contains September 21.

This lets the value render in the final asset without requiring a Marketo Program Token for that Knak Token.

Knak Tokens are useful when you want to build, review, approve, and manage campaign content in Knak while seeing the values that will appear in your assets.

Example: Managing an Event Date

You have a campaign with 10 emails and two landing pages. Each asset includes the event date.

Create an Event Date token and add it to each asset. Set its campaign value to September 21.

If the event moves to September 25, change the token value to September 25 in the campaign. Knak applies the new value anywhere the token is used.

Preview your assets to confirm the new date before syncing them to your marketing automation platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Values Can You Use for Knak Tokens?

You can create tokens for any values you need. Knak Tokens do not need to match existing values in Marketo.

Tokens work best for information that:

  • Appears across multiple assets.

  • Has the same value for everyone who receives the asset.

  • May need to be updated before launch.

For example, you can create tokens for an event date, event time, location, or speaker name.

What Is the Difference Between Knak Tokens and Merge Tags?

Use Knak Tokens when everyone receiving the asset should see the same value. Use merge tags when the value should change based on the individual recipient.

Knak Tokens

Merge Tags

Display the same event date to every recipient

Display each recipient's first name

Display the same speaker name across campaign assets

Display information based on recipient data

Update a shared value across multiple assets

Personalize content for individual recipients

Knak Tokens help you manage shared campaign information at scale. Merge tags personalize content using recipient data from your marketing automation platform (MAP).

Can You Use Knak Tokens Across Multiple Campaigns?

Yes. You configure Knak Tokens at the admin level, so you can use them across multiple campaigns.

Set a default value when you create a token. Each campaign can use that default or set its own campaign-specific value.

Can You Use Knak Tokens and Marketo Program Tokens Together?

Yes. You can use Knak Tokens and Marketo Program Tokens in the same workflow.

Knak Tokens are managed in Knak. Their values do not map to Marketo's My Tokens section. If you use both types of tokens, you will manage them separately in Knak and Marketo.

Can You Use Knak Tokens in Dynamic Content?

Yes. You can use Knak Tokens in dynamic text content.

This can help when you need to include a shared campaign value within dynamic content.

Troubleshooting

Your Token Value Does Not Appear in the Asset Preview

If a token does not display a value when you preview your asset, the token may not have a value set for the campaign.

A token without an admin-level default value must have a value set at the campaign level before it can display a value in your asset.

To check your token:

  1. Open the campaign that contains your asset.

  2. Open the Tokens section.

  3. Find the token that is not displaying a value.

  4. Confirm that the token has a value set for the campaign.

  5. Add a value if the field is blank.

  6. Save your changes.

  7. Return to your asset.

  8. Preview the asset again to confirm the token value appears.

If the value still does not appear, confirm that you inserted the correct token into the asset.
