UTM/URL Parameters

How to Add URL Parameters to Links in Your Emails

Updated this week

Overview

URL parameters (often called query parameters) are pieces of information appended to a URL after a question mark (?). Use them to track clicks, attribute traffic, or trigger dynamic content.

Example:

Knak lets you add URL parameters at three levels:

  • To individual links

  • To all links in a single email

  • To all emails under a brand

Adding URL Parameters to an Individual Email

  1. Open the email you want to edit.

  2. From the top navigation bar, click the three dot menu and select Link Review.

  3. On the Link Review screen:

    • Add a global URL parameter to apply it to all links in the email.

    • Or edit each individual link and set custom URL parameters per link.

Applying URL Parameters Across All Emails for a Brand

You’ll need a user role with permission to manage brands. Contact your account administrator if you need this access.

  1. In the left navigation, go to Studio → Admin → Brands.

  2. Find the brand you want to update. Click Edit next to it.

  3. Scroll to the Email Options section.

  4. Enter the URL parameters you want automatically appended to all links in all emails for that brand.

Using URL Parameters in Modules

You can apply preset URL parameters directly within a module. These parameters will be locked when the module is used in emails, ensuring consistent tracking.

To apply URL parameters in a module:

  1. Open the Module Builder.

  2. Select a button or image element inside the module.

  3. In the right-hand settings panel, locate the Preset URL Tagging section.

  4. Enter your desired URL parameters.

When a user uses that module in an email, those URL parameters will be “locked” (i.e. preserved) in the links.

Things to Know / Best Practices

  • URL parameters should always follow ? in your URL.

  • If URLs already have parameters (i.e. already contain ?), you may need to use & to append more.

  • Locked-down module parameters ensure consistency and reduce errors.

  • Using brand-wide default parameters ensures all links have consistent tracking
